Easy Hikes

Dobbiaco – Santa Maria: ¾ h
From Via Gustav Mahler, take no. 24 trail (after the house near the soccer pitch and ice skating rink). Continue on the tarmac road across a bridge (over the San Silvestro brook) and then follow the road as it takes a turn to the west. At the next junction (near a bank) a field path to Santa Maria goes off to the right. Alternatively, you can stay on the tarmac road and after a couple of minutes you will reach a small settlement called Novecase. From there, take the road to Santa Maria (to the right), where you can relax on a bench and enjoy the good weather. A sunny tarmac road (with sidewalk) leads back to Dobbiaco.

Dobbiaco – San Silvestro: 1½ h
From the Dobbiaco town center, follow Via Anton Zeiler direction north until you see a small forest path going off to the right. In approx. 30 minutes you will reach San Silvestro. To return to Dobbiaco, take a tarmac country road to the west of San Silvestro, past Leitnstöckl.

Dobbiaco – Monte Rota: 1½ h
Follow the instructions in the first paragraph to reach Santa Maria. There, follow the bend past the church until you reach a winding tarmac road which leads through the countryside to Monte Rota (approx. 1 ½ hours). There you will be able to take in the stunning views of Dobbiaco and Lake Dobbiaco.

Dobbiaco - Villabassa: ¾ h
Follow the instructions in the first paragraph to reach the Novecase settlement, however, this time do not go off to the right to Santa Maria, but stay on the road which leads westwards towards Villabassa. In Villabassa, turn right at the beginning of the village, and walk along the brook into the newly designed park. In the center, you can also visit the Wassermann museum.

Dobbiaco – Costanosellari – San Candido – Dobbiaco Nuova: 2 h
Right after the church in Dobbiaco, go right on one of the region’s most beautiful hiking trails. This trail starts off with a short climb up to Costanosellari, before leading past a larch forest and some houses to Anderterhof farm. The trail leads past the Anderterhof farm and Klammschössl. In order to reach the center of San Candido, turn left into a narrow field trail just before the Klammschlössl tennis courts, direction east. At the end of San Candido, follow the cycling trail back to Dobbiaco.

Dobbiaco Nuova – Lake Dobbiaco – nature trail: 1½ h
Leave the main street approx. 100 meters after the railway crossing and go on the lakeside trail. Walk past private homes and guest houses to the cross-country ski stadium, the outdoor pools and the tennis courts. Continue on your way past a bridge and past the Seghe settlement until you get onto a gravel road which leads slightly uphill to Lake Dobbiaco. After the two restaurants at the lake, a nature path goes off to the right, which goes all the way around the lake and offers unforgettable views!

Dobbiaco Nuova – source of River Drava – San Candido: 1½ h
Take the main road direction Cortina. After Pension Emma (shortly before the end of Dobbiaco), take the trail to the left. After a short, soft climb, the trail leads towards the east, into the larch forest behind the famous Grand Hotel. Walk past the military shooting range and about halfway you will find the source of River Drava. Continue on the same road until you reach San Candido.

Roman Road: Monte Rota – Villabassa - Monguelfo: 2- 2½ h
From Monte Rota to the north of Dobbiaco (see paragraph no. 3) take the beautiful no. 41 trail which leads northwards through the forest to Villabassa and then downhill to Monguelfo.

Santa Maria - San Pietro in Monte: 1 h
Shortly after the Santa Maria church take a road to the left which leads to a junction near the Wegscheiderhof farm. Turn right into the road to Melate. Just before you reach the first village farms, take a narrow trail to the right which takes you to San Pietro in Monte. This picturesque walk leads past forests and clearings to the San Pietro church, the first church built in the Upper Pusteria valley, around 800 BC. Visit the church or simply enjoy the stunning scenery before you take the nature path through the forest back to Santa Maria.

Dobbiaco Nuova – Carbonin Vecchia – Bagni di Piandimaia - Villabassa: 1½ h
In Dobbiaco Nuova, cross the railway junction and turn right after Hotel Union. This road leads slightly downhill to the Rienza quarter of town. At the bifurcation, stay to the right and cross a bridge. Walk westwards past ski lifts and meadows until you reach the Carbonin Vecchia farms (the former summer residence of the composer Gustav Mahler). Walk in direction south-west and west to Piandimaia, where a road leads to Villabassa.

Dobbiaco – Genziana hut - Candele: 1½ h
Follow the instructions to San Silvestro as described in paragraph 2, then continue towards the Genziana hut. Turn left after the hut, and at the second junction continue straight in direction Candele. After a short walk through the forest you will reach a small pond which offers stunning views of Dobbiaco, surrounded by the pristine, untouched nature.
