Hike to Tre Cime: Landro – Tre Cime hut

Point of departure: Landro (Hotel Tre Cime)
Arrival: by car or SAD bus into the Landro valley to Landro
Difference in altitude: 1.000 m
Total walking time: ascent 3 ½ h
Restaurants: Tre Cime Alpine hut

Itinerary: From Landro (1,405 m) continue eastwards on the forestry road into the Rienza valley (no. 102 trail). Enjoy a stunning, unforgettable view of the Tre Cime northern wall. Continue walking uphill to the top of the valley until you reach a serpentine road which leads past knee timber and rocks to the Rienzboden meadows (2,175 m) which offer great views of the Tre Cime northern wall and of Monte Paterno. Continue until you reach the Tre Cime hut (2,405 m).

Difficulty: Easy/medium

Hiking without a car: Tre Cime loop trail

Point of departure: Auronzo Alpine hut (2,320 m)
Arrival: take the bus to Auronzo hut (cheaper than taking private car)
Total walking time: 4 h
Restaurants: Tre Cime hut, Auronzo hut, Lavaredo hut

Itinerary: From the Auronzo hut, follow no. 101 trail on the southern side of Tre Cime and continue past the Lavaredo hut (2,344 m) on a slightly uphill road to Monte Paterno peak (2,454 m). From there you have a breathtaking view of the 500-meter high northern walls of Tre Cime (the walk until there is approx. 1 hour and is also suited to inexperienced hikers. Follow the path downhill until you reach a fork in the road which offers the following options:
  1. easy uphill hike to the Tre Cime hut (2,405 m) to the right
  2. go left and follow the no. 105 trail downhill. Soon the trail will merge with the no. 102 path coming up from the Rienza valley. Stay on the no. 105 trail until you reach the “Lange Alpe” Alpine hut, where you can have a snack. Continue past small lakes and round Tre Cime in the west until you reach the Aronzo hut.
Difficulty: Medium

Hike to Monte Piana (2,324 m)

Point of departure: Lake Landro – Hotel Tre Cime (1400 m)
Difference in altitude: ascent 900 m
Total walking time: 3 h
Sights: Be sure to visit the Monte Piana outdoor museum. This mountain was a strategic obstacle point between Austria and Italy in WWI between 1915 and 1917.
Restaurants: Bosi Alpine hut

Itinerary: Ascent on the no. 6 trail. From Hotel Tre Cime or Lake Landro walk in the valley until you reach the north-western end of the mountain. Take a serpentine road which leads past gorges and ravines on a secure rock path and a rope track until you reach a soldiers’ cemetery. Then go on one of two marked trails which lead past remains from the war to the plateau and the southern and northern trail to the summit.
Take the no. 6A trail to Carbonin and then walk along Lake Landro back to the departure point, or take the no. 6 trail in the north and descend into the Rimbianco valley via Forcella di Castrati. Alternatively, stay to the west (left) where a slightly downhill path leads back into the Rienza valley.

Difficulty: High, only suitable for experienced hikers, some exposed trails, surefootedness required.

Hikes: Dobbiaco high-altitude trail

High-altitude hike offering stunning views of the Dolomites and the glaciers in the main chain of the Alps.

Point of departure: Genziana hut, San Silvestro valley (1360 m)
Marking: red/white and yellow, follow “H“ markings. Stay on no. 1b, 1 and 24 trails.
Total walking time: 10 - 11 h if all you’re planning on climbing all peaks. Earlier descents are possible via the no. 25 and 25A trails.

Itinerary: Rifugio Genziana (1,360 m) - San Silvestro valley – San Silvestro hut (restaurant) - Cornetto di Confine (2,546 m)- Blankenstein (2,483 m)- Corno Fana (2,663 m)- Corno Alto (2,623 m)- Monte Calvo (2,493 m)- Franadega (restaurant)- car park at Genziana hut.

Difficulty: Easy but some stamina is required.

Hike to San Silvestro chapel (1,912 m)

Point of departure: Dobbiaco Vecchia (1,264 m) or Genziana Alpine hut
Difference in altitude: ascent 600 m
Total walking time: 2- 2½ h
Sights: San Silvestro chapel
Restaurants: San Silvestro Alpine hut in summer

Itinerary: From Dobbiaco, follow no. 1B trail past San Silvestro into the eponymous valley on the right. Continue on the marked trail to San Silvestro Alpine hut and chapel.

Difficulty: Easy (also suitable for good cyclists)

Hike to Prato Piazza meadows

Point of departure: Cimabanche (1,523 m) (situated on the national road between Dobbiaco and Cortina)
Difference in altitude: ascent 500 m
Total walking time: 1½- 2 h im ascent
Sights: Stunning views of the Hohe Gaisl and Cristallo peaks in the Dolomites
Restaurants: Plätzwiese mountain inn, Hotel Hohe Gaisl, Vallandro Alpine hut.

Itinerary: Walk through the Canopi valley on the no. 18 trail, until you reach the Prato Piazza meadows (located on an altitude of 2,000 m).

Difficulty: Easy, surefootedness required

Hike to Vallandro peak (2,839 m)

Point of departure: Car park at the northern end of Prato Piazza meadows (1,970 m)
(from 10 July, however, car parking is possible only at the Ponticello car parks from where a bus leaves every full hour between 10 am and 4 pm)
Difference in altitude: ascent and descent 870 m
Total walking time: 3 ½ – 3 ¾ Stunden
Sights: Stunning vistas of the Upper Pusteria valley.
Restaurants: Plätzwiese mountain inn, Hotel Hohe Gaisl, Vallandro Alpine hut

Itinerary: From Prato Piazza car park walk up to Plätzwiese mountain inn and Hotel Hohe Gaisl. Turn left immediately after the inn and take no. 40 trail to the Vallandro hut. Take no. 3 trail to the peak and go on a rope track which leads to the highest point of Vallandro (2,839 m).

Difficulty: Easy yet exhausting hike, surefootedness and a head for heights are required. To be undertaken only in good weather.

Hike to Val Foresta and Hochalpen lakes

Point of departure: Hotel Lago di Braies
Difference in altitude: ascent and descent 810 m
Total walking time: 5 ¾ bis 6 Stunden
Restaurants: Hotel Lago di Braies, Foresta Alpine hut, Hochalpen Alpine hut

Itinerary: At Hotel Lago di Braies, take no. 1 trail until you reach the meadow at the south-western end of the valley, then turn right into no. 19 and 22 trails. Continue through the Foresta valley to the Alpine hut (1,590 m). Cross the brook and walk past no. 22 trail to the right onto no. 19 trail, past the Hochalpen hut to Kreuzjoch (2,283 m), continue on no. 3 trail northwards to the Hochalpen lakes (2,254 m).

Difficulty: Medium, very long hike, well-signposted trail.

Hike to Zsigmondy hut (2235 m)

Point of departure: Val Fiscalina car park (1,454 m), at 5 km from Sesto and 3 km from Moso.
Difference in altitude: ascent and descent 780 m
Total walking time: 2- 2 ½ Stunden
Sights: Fantastic views of the valley.

Itinerary: At Val Fiscalina car park, take no. 102 and 103 trails to the Fondo Valle hut (1,526 m). Continue through the Sasso Vecchio valley on the no.103 trail and past steep, rocky terrain on a winding path to Zsigmondy hut. The hut offers places to sleep, food & drink, light and showers. Difficulty: Easy hike followed by exhausting climb to the hut.

Hike to Monte Elmo – by cable car, descent by foot

Point of departure: mountain station of Monte Elmo cable car in Sesto (2,041 m), lower station (1,320 m)
Difference in altitude: 320 m
Total walking time: 1½ h
Sights: Unforgettable views of Fiscalina valley.
Restaurants: Ristorante Elmo, Waldruhe inn

Itinerary: Hike from mountain station to the Monte Elmo in the west, then follow no. 4 trail.

Difficulty: Easy walk down to the valley, suitable also for children and elderly.
